Hello everyone,

I am Sami Mahmudoğlu. When I arrived in Madan, one of Bulgaria’s small, quiet towns, I did not really know what was waiting for me. Living and working in another country with different people was as exciting as it was uncertain at first.

But as time passed that uncertainty gave way to a powerful experience, good friendships and unforgettable memories. Volunteering in Madan was not just a project for me: it was a journey across borders in which I met new people and got to know myself better.

My Volunteering

Throughout the placement we had the chance to meet local people, spend time with young people and take part in a range of social activities. Every day I learned something new and understood better how valuable it is to work with people from other cultures towards a shared aim.

The connection we built with the local community made our activities far more meaningful. Sometimes a small piece of help, sometimes a short time spent together, sometimes just an honest conversation could leave a good mark on someone’s life.

What This Gave Me

The experience did not only give me new skills; it taught me patience, communication and respect for difference. Being in the same place as people from other cultures felt unfamiliar at first, but over time I realised how much it helps you grow.

Sometimes a child’s smile, sometimes an older person’s thanks made us feel how meaningful our work was. Those moments showed me that volunteering is not only an activity but a process of building real connection with people.

What Stayed with Me from Madan

Volunteering in Madan gave me memories and friendships I will never forget. The people I met there, the work we did together and the moments we shared meant a great deal to me.

Looking back, I see this journey was not only about contributing to others but an important opportunity to discover myself. Adapting to new environments, taking responsibility and working with different people gave me confidence.
