Two Months in Madan: Volunteering, Friendship and Unforgettable Memories
Some experiences do not only take you to a place; they also change the way you look at yourself and the world. For me, the two-month European Solidarity Corps volunteering experience I had in Madan, Bulgaria was exactly such a process.
Living as a volunteer in Madan for two months, sharing the same environment with different people, working together, producing together and discovering new cultures became an experience that will always have a special place in my life. By the end of the project, Madan was not just a city where I volunteered; it had become a place where I found peace, built beautiful friendships and felt that I had left a part of myself behind.
Life in Madan
Madan is a small, calm city surrounded by nature. When I first arrived, the silence and peacefulness of the city caught my attention. As time passed, I realised that this calmness became much more meaningful for me.
Being away from the intensity of daily life, living close to nature and being together with people from different countries offered me a different life experience. Throughout my time in Madan, I felt peaceful.
In addition, the sincerity and hospitality of the local people made this experience even more special for me. Thanks to their approach, conversations and interest, we quickly felt like a part of this small city.
Our Volunteering Activities
Throughout the project, we took part in many different activities where we could contribute both to the environment and to the local community.
We carried out environmental arrangements in common areas, cleaned weeds from pavements and took part in grass-cutting activities. In addition, we helped people living in villages with their winter preparations by chopping and arranging firewood.
The activities we carried out with elderly people were among the most meaningful parts of the project for me. Spending time with them, talking to them and helping them in their daily lives helped me see that volunteering is not only physical support. I experienced how even a small help or a few minutes of our time can be very valuable for people.
Throughout the project, we also organised robotics and coding workshops with young people. Sharing my own interests and experiences with other young people and showing them new things in the field of technology and robotics was also very enjoyable for me. Producing, learning and creating something together became one of the most special parts of my volunteering experience.
Different Cultures, New Friendships
Sharing the same environment with volunteers from different countries for these two months contributed a lot to me culturally.
We worked together, cooked together, played games, talked, travelled and sometimes simply spent time together without doing anything. Over time, people from different countries became not only project friends for me, but real friendships.
I experienced how beautiful it is when people from different cultures come together for the same purpose. Each of us had different stories, habits and perspectives. Despite this, we built a very beautiful harmony together.
This process once again showed me that people have more similarities than differences.
Memories I Collected in Madan
Outside the volunteering activities, we also created many beautiful memories together. We played volleyball, had picnics, organised karaoke and movie nights, played different games and had long conversations.
Sometimes our best memories were not created during big events, but on an ordinary evening we spent together. Sitting around the same table and talking for hours, laughing together or sharing what we experienced at the end of the day became one of the most valuable parts of this process for me.
I also used the free days provided within the ESC programme to discover different European cities and countries outside Bulgaria. Seeing different cities, meeting new cultures and sometimes travelling on my own also improved my self-confidence.
What Did This Experience Give Me?
During my two months in Madan, I did not only volunteer. I also developed myself in many different ways.
I learned how to communicate with different people, work in a team, take responsibility and adapt more easily to different conditions. I had the opportunity to improve my communication skills by using English more in daily life.
Living together with people from different cultures allowed me to look at the world from a broader perspective. I learned to evaluate people and situations from outside my own habits.
Perhaps most importantly, I learned to trust myself more. Living in a different country for two months, meeting new people, entering different environments and sometimes overcoming things I was not used to gave me much more than I expected.
Leaving Madan
Before I realised how fast the two months had passed, it was time to say goodbye.
When I left Madan, I felt that I was not leaving only a project behind. I took with me the friendships I built there, the beautiful memories I had, the evenings we laughed together, the work we did and the peace it made me feel.
Madan became much more than a calm city for me. The time I spent there showed me that peace can sometimes be hidden in a place, sometimes in people and sometimes in beautiful moments shared together.
Maybe one day I will return to Madan. Because some places are only visited, while some places leave you with the desire to return. Madan was definitely the second kind for me.
Thank You
I would like to thank the KOZ-DER family, Halil ÖZKARACA, whose support I felt throughout the process, our hosting organisation and all my project friends who made these two months unforgettable for me.
I am grateful to everyone I worked with, laughed with, learned with and created beautiful memories with.
This two-month volunteering experience was not only an ESC project for me; it became the beginning of a beautiful period full of new friendships, different cultures, new experiences and memories I will remember throughout my life.
I left Madan, but I took with me the two months I spent there, the friendships I built and my beautiful memories.
